OVERVIEW

The Civic Space & Media Freedom Project (CSMFP) is a strategic initiative aimed at safeguarding democratic values by protecting civic space and promoting independent, responsible journalism. In many contexts, shrinking civic space, restrictions on media freedom, and threats against journalists undermine transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance.

CSMFP works to strengthen the role of the media and civil society as key pillars of democracy. Through monitoring, capacity building, and advocacy, the project empowers citizens, journalists, and activists to exercise their rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and active participation in public life.

Key Activities

1. Monitoring and Reporting on Press Freedom Violations
CSMFP systematically tracks and documents incidents involving attacks on journalists, censorship, and restrictions on media operations. These reports contribute to national and international advocacy efforts aimed at promoting accountability and protecting press freedom.

2. Training Journalists on Human Rights Reporting
The project organizes training programs and workshops to enhance the capacity of journalists and media practitioners in ethical, accurate, and rights-based reporting. This strengthens the quality of information available to the public and promotes responsible journalism.

3. Advocacy for Policy and Legal Reforms
CSMFP engages policymakers, regulators, and stakeholders to advocate for laws and policies that protect freedom of expression and expand civic space. The initiative works to ensure that legal frameworks align with democratic principles and human rights standards.

4. Digital Rights and Online Safety Campaigns
Recognizing the growing importance of digital platforms, the project promotes awareness of digital rights, online safety, and protection against cyber threats. Campaigns focus on equipping citizens—especially youth and activists—with tools to navigate the digital space safely and responsibly.
