OVERVIEW
The Climate Justice & Land Rights Initiative (CJLR) is a strategic program dedicated to addressing the growing challenges of environmental degradation, land dispossession, and climate injustice affecting vulnerable communities. In many regions, unsustainable practices such as illegal mining, deforestation, and land exploitation continue to threaten livelihoods, ecosystems, and long-term development.
CJLR works to amplify the voices of affected communities while promoting sustainable environmental practices and equitable land governance. By combining research, advocacy, and grassroots engagement, the initiative seeks to ensure that natural resources are managed responsibly and that communities retain their rights to land and a healthy environment.
Key Activities
1. Investigative Reporting on Illegal Mining (Galamsey)
CJLR conducts in-depth investigations into illegal mining activities, documenting their environmental, social, and economic impacts. These reports are used to raise awareness, support enforcement efforts, and advocate for stronger accountability measures.
2. Community Advocacy on Land Rights
The initiative empowers communities with knowledge about land ownership, usage rights, and legal protections. Through community dialogues and legal support, CJLR helps individuals and groups defend their land against unlawful acquisition and exploitation.
3. Climate Change Awareness and Education Campaigns
CJLR implements outreach programs to educate communities—especially youth—on climate change, its local impacts, and sustainable practices. These campaigns encourage environmental stewardship and community-led solutions.
4. Policy Engagement and Stakeholder Collaboration
The project actively engages with government agencies, civil society organizations, and policymakers to influence environmental and land governance policies. By fostering dialogue and partnerships, CJLR contributes to more inclusive and effective policy frameworks.
